Computers for Classrooms, Inc. relies on our wonderful volunteer base to refurbish the computers. Anyone desiring to learn more about computers who is willing to work for fifty hours can earn their own computer.
Many volunteers are adults, learning computer skills so that they can find jobs. We have had people with A+ certification who needed actual experience prior to becoming employeed.
Junior high, high school, and home schooled students love to earn their own computers. People with disabilities are welcome. Our receptionist is blind, but she earned her computer and is thrilled at being able to email and write letters with special software. Our volunteers range in age from 13 to 82.
Retirees often make some of our best workers. Computers weren't around when they were in school so they love to learn in order to be able to keep up with their grand children.
We work closely with the MIS (Management Information Systems) graduating seniors at CSUC (California State University, Chico). As a class requirement, the students each volunteer ten hours at our office. For many it has been the first time they have seen inside of a computer. This last acemdemic year we worked with 240 students. We look forward to seeing a new group of seniors finding out about computers literally from the inside out.
The volunteer office hours are between 9:00 and 5:00 weekdays. No prior knowledge is necessary.
Come on in, learn a lot, meet some great people and know that you are helping California school children become computer literate.
